The Academy of Performing Arts is a vibrant School whose mission is to enrich our community through the arts. Established in 1975, the Academy offers year-round instruction in dance, music, and theatre for all ages. We also have a growing visual arts program that includes exhibitions in our Playhouse Gallery. Our students come from a broad range of interests, ages and abilities to study with professionals who bring a wealth of talent in each discipline. Some of our students pursue careers in the arts and some come to connect to the arts in their leisure time. All of our students reap the many benefits of participation as they develop their creative thinking and problem solving skills, expand their imagination, enjoy ensemble work, refine their technical skills, gain a sense of membership in an active arts community, and acquire a life-long appreciation for the arts.
Established in 1975, the Academy has offered year round instruction in dance, music, and drama for over 25 years. We have recently introduced visual arts classes for adults and children. Students receive arts training from professional faculty with a broad range of experience in both performance and education. We are committed to providing learning opportunities for all ages and levels of ability. Of our 600 students, some will pursue careers in the arts, yet equally important, all will acquire a life-long appreciation for the arts and reap the many benefits of arts education by improving creative thinking and problem solving skills, stimulating imagination, encouraging self expression and building self esteem.
One of our primary goals at the School is to provide quality technical training for our students. Performance is crucial to the development of all performing artists. The Playhouse offers a unique opportunity for our students to participate in a variety of productions as dancers, actors, musicians, backstage crew, set, lighting and costume designers. The summer Children’s Theatre productions offer our students a chance to perform on a weekly basis during July and August. Additional performing opportunities are available in our annual Holiday production, Tap Night, Spring Dance Concerts and Outreach programs as well as through our adult Tap performing group, The Elaine Chase Dancers and our all girl band, Wildflower.
Our Outreach program is dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 grade education by promoting the integration of the arts throughout the school curriculum. Now in its seventeenth year, the Outreach Program supports opportunities for every student ‘to understand, create and communicate meaning’ through the arts. By offering the highest quality of interactive arts programs, the Academy partners with area schools to enhance learning through residencies, workshops, assemblies, teacher in-service workshops, graduate study and community programming. The Academy has established itself as a leader in innovative Arts in Education models, providing arts integration methods to benefit students, teachers and artists.
